For most couples, the path of true love begins with flowers, a special date and a common attraction to one another. Some couples find love in a more unorthodox manner. This is true for General Hospital’s Jax and Carly. Their love story didn’t begin with hearts & flowers, more like an explosion or trying to mix oil and water. Jax and Carly's love story wasn't apparent from the beginning, but then again, maybe it was since it began with an instant and intense dislike for one another.

Carly, who was enmeshed in the mob world through her friendship with Jason Morgan and her many marriages to Port Charles’s mob lord, Sonny Corinthos, would not be the logical choice for one suave, debonair playboy Jasper Jax. Jax, a smooth, rich, corporate raider with a penchant for melting the heart any female who wanted their shot at this handsome man was also definitely not the obvious choice for Carly Benson Quatermaine Corinthos Corinthos, etc., etc. However, in the end, all it took was one small bundle of joy to bring these intolerable persons together to form a common bond.

Jax and Carly originally met when they owned a nightclub together because Carly wanted to escape the mafia lifestyle she had been living with Sonny Corinthos.  That business venture didn't last, however, and the two parted ways.

After many years, and marriages, Carly's longed to start a new life. Sadly, as she was beginning her new life, Carly's best friend, Courtney Matthews Jax, died just after giving birth and Carly discovered that Jax was not the father. She agreed to honor her friend's wishes and keep quiet to protect the baby from the evil Cassadines, the baby's true paternal relatives. The two bonded over their love for baby John. Carly's nemesis, Dr. Robin Scorpio, however learned the truth about baby John and, once she revealed it to Nikolas Cassadine, the baby's biological father, Jax was forced to give up the child. Nikolas has since renamed him Spencer Cassadine.  Devastated by the reveal and having to give up the baby they had grown to love, Jax and Carly turned to each other in their grief. Through their grief they were able to put aside all of the animosity they had and form an unlikely friendship. And, in the usual Carly-like fashion, she needed something to fill the void of losing baby John, of another failed marriage to Sonny, and simply wanted something of her own to focus on. So what better way to distract herself than to go after a piece of one of Jax’s most prized possessions? Carly decided to purchase an equal share in ownership of the Metro Court Hotel.

Once they became business partners, a hidden attraction developed between the two.  Jax and Carly danced around their undeniable attraction to one another because neither wanted to be the first to fold in this game of mutual attraction and denial. Carly would not make the chase easy for Jax, nor would Jax give into Carly’s little teases. They each played games, tried to out smart each other, and began the comical love warfare that could easily be dubbed the Thomas Crown Affair. As their tug-of-love competition ensued, Jax and Carly could no longer deny their attraction. Finally, giving in to their surfacing feelings, Jax and Carly succumbed to a night filled with romance and passion.

Their magical night of passion cemented their commitment to each other, but, what love story is not wrought with bumps along the way? Jax and Carly’s love was tested by many who said they wouldn’t last or were crazy for contemplating a relationship. The biggest test of their love was from the threat of Carly’s lingering feelings for her ex-husband, Sonny Corinthos when she married him after he shot Lorenzo Alcazar while Jax was out of town. And, even after their divorce, Sonny tried to come between the pair more than once, but Jax and Carly's love remained true. They were able to move past infidelity and doubt to forge ahead in trust and love for their future. They married in a beautiful ceremony with the blessings of both Michael and Morgan. Carly's two son's.

Soon their trials began again. Kate Howard, an old love of Sonny's, came to town and began a new business venture with Jax. Carly immediately disliked her and decided to find out more about her. Meanwhile, to prove her love and commitment to Jax, Carly wanted to give Jax a precious gift and thereby became pregnant. At the same time, young teen Michael, fearful of the violence that surrounded his family, purchased a gun and accidentally shot Kate. He ran away, leaving Carly, Jax, and Sonny fearful that he had been kidnapped by Anthony Zacchara; a mafia boss newly arrived in Port Charles.  Upon Michael's returns to town, he and Carly were injured in an explosion at one of the warehouses and she was thrown into the harbor.  Miraculously Ric Lansing rescued Carly, who was suffering from hypothermia. Unfortunately the stress surrounding her family and her injuries suffered in the explosion caused Carly to lose her and Jax's baby, but they vowed to keep trying.

Once again things seemed to be calm and happy for the loving couple, however tragedy soon struck yet again to test their devotion when Michael was struck by a bullet meant for his father and fell into a coma. Through it all, Jax remained Carly’s steady rock, giving her the support, space and understanding she needed. Needing to protect her children at all costs, Carly decided she needed Sonny to turn over his parental rights to Michael and Morgan. On a painful ride to place their son, Michael, in a long-term care facility, grief stricken over their son’s condition, Carly and Sonny gave into the overpowering grief and succumbed to each other in an act of betrayal. Instantly regretting this act, Carly, drowning in guilt. vowed to keep this secret liaison from Jax and continue to devote her all to her marriage. This betrayal would come to light and yet again test Jax and Carly’s love. It pushed them to the brink of ending their marriage, but in the end neither could give up on their marriage. Carly worked hard at winning back Jax’s trust and her unwavering love proved to Jax that they really do belong together.

Carly decided to host a gala at General Hospital to raise money for research to help Michael and other children suffering brain injuries. Initially leaving Port Charles for a business meeting in Hong Kong, Jax returned to discover that Carly and several of their friends had been quarantined because of a biotoxin that had been released in the hospital. When a fire began engulfing the hospital, Jax, risked his life by flying the helicopter to rescue people off the roof. During one particularly intense gust, he crashed, leaving Carly to believe he was dead. Jax survived, and, needing to get to his wife, convinced Alexis  Davis and Mac Scorpio to let him fly the police helicopter to continue his efforts. He was able to make several more successful rescue flights, though his wife wasn't among the passengers. Carly, however, being resourceful and tenacious, was able to escape through one of the stairwells, and the two were reunited.  Wanting nothing more than to show each other how much their love meant to one another, Jax and Carly recommitted to one another in a heartfelt ceremony vowing to fight for their happiness.

Currently, Carly and Jax are miraculously expecting a child and Michael has awakened from his coma. While they did not have the homecoming Carly was wishing for, she's overjoyed that her son has been brought back to her. Jax, meanwhile, knowing that Carly's pregnancy is extremely high risk, knows that Claudia Zacchara and his brother Jerry were responsible for Michael being shot and being in the coma. He is currently keeping the secret from his wife, hoping to spare her and their unborn child the stress that could end the pregnancy. The only problem being that Michael will eventually remember everything confessed to him during his coma, including Jax's confession that his brother and Claudia Zacchara were involved in his shooting. However, their loving bond is so strong and has withstood many tests already, it will no doubt withstand any others to come.
